Hello to everyone of the Coalition!
My name is Emma Boxer (they/them), and I am so excited to announce that I am starting this July as the DEIJ intern at the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed!
Throughout my life, I have attempted to garner as much knowledge as possible about the natural world. This passion led me towards many research and volunteer endeavors; including, teaching youth about sustainability and wildlife at the Turtle Back Zoo in New Jersey, conducting research on salamanders, and eventually working as a grounds manager and animal caretaker at the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum also in New Jersey. In addition, I had the amazing opportunity to participate in a large-scale climate change research project in the Pyrenees Mountains in Andorra.
As I pursue an environmental studies major with a justice focus at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, I have continued to refine my environmental work as I learn more about policy, justice, climate change, and other pertinent issues. I have taken opportunities in college to represent the student body on matters of sustainability, such as through my work as an ECO Representative at Wellesley’s Office of Sustainability.
I have been using my resources to learn as much as possible about equality (and the lack thereof) in the environmental world. I recently conducted a research project on dioxin in Newark’s waterways and have maintained ongoing communication with students who have been impacted by environmental injustices. This work led me to pursue the diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice internship here at the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed.
I hope to use my time here to learn as much as possible about how policy impacts justice at all levels, what are the steps environmental organizations and government groups need to take to tackle issues of DEIJ head on, and to contribute to the pursuit of DEIJ at CDRW! I am so excited and honored to take on this position, and am so looking forward to working with everyone at CDRW!
