This event is hosted by AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador and Ocean Township Environmental Commission. Please join a limited number of volunteers at Joe Palaia Park in Ocean Township on Saturday, April 10th at 10 a.m. to remove invasive vines which are smothering and strangling the trees in the park. Several species of non-native, invasive vines such as porcelain berry, Asian wisteria, and oriental bittersweet are running rampant in the park. Without removing them, the trees will eventually die either due to loss of sunlight, being strangled by larger vines, or due to the sheer weight of the vines on the tree branches.
Parking for the park is located off Whalepond Road, Oakhurst, NJ 07755, across the street from 263 Whalepond Road. We’ll meet at the informational sign adjacent to the lot promptly at 10 a.m. and work no later than 2 p.m.
(Rain date is Sunday, April 11th same time).
Please bring gloves and wear long sleeves, as poison ivy may also be growing amongst the other vines. Because deer ticks are present in the park, be sure to wear repellent such as Deet and/or Permethrin and check yourself thoroughly after leaving the park. Though a small number of tools will be available, please bring your own clippers if possible.
Masks and social distancing required.
