Fourth Annual Shell-A-Bration, Newport, NJ

march 31.jpg

Come lend a hand and shell-a-brate American Littoral Society's building of their fifth intertidal reef along the Delaware Bay. The event will take place at Dyers Cove, 135 Dyers Creek Road, Newport, NJ. In October of 2016, a reef was established at the eastern side of the Cove. The new reef will begin to be constructed on the western portion at this Shell-A-Bration. Learn more about oyster reef construction here.

The work at this event will include carrying bags of shell to a site just off the beach. Dress to get wet and dirty. Layers are recommended as it may be chillier on the bay, and you may want to bring a change of clothes for after the work is completed. Gloves will be provided for volunteers. Food and beverages will be provided by Spanky's BBQ following the reef build.

The American Littoral Society helped restore beaches at a number of locations following Hurricane Sandy and has been establishing near-shore reefs at those sites. The reefs will prevent sand loss from wind driven waves. They have already established oyster reef living shorelines at South Reeds Beach, Moores Beach, Thompsons Beach and the eastern portion of Dyers Cove.

This event is free, but please RSVP with Quinn Whitesall at quinn@littoralsociety.org.
