The New Jersey Pinelands Commission will discuss and take public comments on South Jersey Gas's proposal to build a 22-mile pipeline through the Pine Barrens Preservation Area.
This project threatens the Pinelands National Reserve and violates the rules that govern and protect it. The Pinelands National Reserve was established in 1978 by federal legislation to protect the Pine Barrens, a globally rare ecosystem that is home to plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. The Pine Barrens also holds one of the largest freshwater aquifers in the U.S., which provides drinking water to more than one million residents.
