Forests, Urban Trees, and Climate Change

This workshop will provide those who are responsible for the health of trees in forests, on streets, in parks, in yards, and on academic and corporate campuses a better understanding how trees in our region are expected to respond to the inevitable threats of climate change. These threats include more hot days, fewer days below freezing, longer periods of drought, heavier storms, and stronger winds.
Expert panelists will talk briefly about what their research indicates is happening, as well as what they have learned about keeping current tree species healthy and selecting species going forward. Panelists will take questions from workshop participants about specific issues they may be facing.
This will be an interactive workshop, with plenty of time for discussion and questions.
The panelists are:
- Joan S. Blaustein, Director, Urban Forestry and Ecosystem Management Division, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation
- Greg Czarnecki, Climate Change & Research Coordinator, PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
- Jason Grabosky, Ph.D., Ecology Evolution and Natural Resources, Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences
- Sarah C. Low, Field Station Team Leader and Biological Scientist, US Forest Service Northern Research Station
- Jason Lubar, Board Certified Master Arborist, Associate Director of Urban Forestry, The Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania
The panel will be moderated by Patty Elkis, DVRPC’s Director of Planning. This workshop is approved for 2.5 ISA CEU credits. LA CES PHS & APA CM credit approval is pending.
