Hosted by the Nature Nurture Center.

Increasing frequency of intense rainfall events and flood damage in the northeast U.S. suggest a need for improved flash flood prediction and warning systems. This presentation will focus on some recent research on changes in local precipitation and factors that make some watersheds more vulnerable than others. Although urbanization is a dominant factor, other factors like geology, soils, wetlands, and terrain also contribute to flood susceptibility.

David Brandes is a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Lafayette College and chair of the new interdisciplinary engineering program. He teaches courses in water resources engineering, environmental studies, and sustainability. His research areas include hydrology and the impacts of urbanization on streamflow, river hydraulics, and movement ecology.
